Basic Plot: Taking place nearly a decade after the events from the first film, a joint operation by the Americans and the Soviets is put together to discover the fate of the doomed Discovery One mission. Along for the trip are Dr. Heywood Floyd and Dr. R. Chandra, the creator of the HAL 9000.
Rating (Out of 4): 2
Pros: An interesting, if unnecessary, sequel that answers some of the lingering and ambiguous questions from the first film. Good work by the cast, with special mention to Scheider, Mirren, Lithgow, and Balaban. It’s kind of cool to hear HAL, once again voiced by Douglas Rain.
Cons: Not nearly as stunning or awe-inspiring as the first film. Has a much more straight-forward plot than the original. Due to political changes that have occurred following its release, major aspects of the film are completely dated.
